1.1 What is Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking
Modern slavery, human trafficking and slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour, is a highly complex and hidden crime that is a violation of fundamental human rights. All of which have in common the deprivation of a person's liberty by another in order to exploit them for personal or commercial gain. These crimes include holding a person in a position of slavery, servitude forced or compulsory labour, or facilitating their travel with the intention of exploiting them soon after. Human trafficking Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labour or commercial sex act. Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to lure their victims and force them into labour or commercial sexual exploitation.
1.2 UK Modern Slavery Act 2015
The UK Government has estimated there are 13,000 victims of modern slavery in the UK and the number is increasing. In 2015 the Modern Slavery Act was passed, requiring all companies with a turnover of more than £36 million operating in the UK to publish an annual slavery and human trafficking statement outlining their approach to identifying and eradicating slavery in their supply chains.
1.3 The purpose of our modern slavery policy
Northern Star Logistics Limited realises the risks imposed by operating in the imports and exports industry and endeavours to identify and remove any risk of slavery or human trafficking where possible.
1.4 How we plan on eradicating the risk of modern slavery and human trafficking
Our staff are trained in awareness, how to identify the risk of modern slavery and human trafficking and implement processes to reduce and remove this risk. We impose regular checks and require any partners and companies we may employee to follow a strict checking policy in order to eradicate human trafficking in our operations and supply chains.
